The Emotional Landscape: Exploring Why I Paint

When the Rains Came
Introduction
Imagine a group standing before a large painting by Mark Rothko in a quiet gallery. Among them is a young woman who recalls a similar moment years ago, overwhelmed by emotions before another Rothko piece titled "Black over Reds, 1957". Reflecting on that time, I remember living in Baltimore, taking a class on modern art. When we reached Rothko's painting—a seemingly simple arrangement of three colored rectangles—I was unexpectedly moved, tears welling up. Recently, I confided in a friend about that experience. Surprisingly, he completely understood and shared a book exploring how Rothko's art touches people on a deep emotional level. Realizing I wasn't alone in my reaction was profound, deepening my appreciation for Rothko's art. Now, whenever I see a Rothko painting, it reminds me of that moment, filling me with emotion and leaving a lasting impression.
Understanding the ‘Why’ Behind My Painting is best summarized by looking at my artistic journey; reflecting how light, composition, color, and emotion influence my work. Painting allows me to express thoughts and ideas in ways words cannot. I enjoy exploring different techniques and styles to interpret the world around me. Inspired by nature, I paint mainly landscapes, natural and rural scenes. Painting is also therapeutic, providing comfort during tough times. Ultimately, painting brings me purpose.
The Journey Begins
As a young child, I was filled with curiosity and creativity, constantly exploring my small world. Art has always been a part of my life, and I always had art projects in the works. A memory stands out vividly in my mind. It was a family meeting called by my parents when I was around 12 years old. We gathered in the living room, where we weren’t normally allowed. I was more than a little nervous, not knowing what a family meeting was, but assuming we were going to get in trouble for something. I was still fretting when my parents announced that each of us was to choose an art form to pursue. My sisters chose music and dance, leaving me still feeling nervous. When I was told I could take art classes, I felt a huge sense of relief and excitement, and enjoyed taking these Saturday morning classes like a young adult.
A new chapter of my artistic journey began at Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia. In Mrs. Keever’s art classes, I gained a strong foundation in various artistic techniques and mediums. One of my favorite memories is of crafting a pinhole camera out of an oatmeal container and capturing images around campus with this simple device. The drawing, painting, and printmaking projects she assigned continue to inspire my artwork to this day. Reflecting on those early days, I’m grateful for Mrs. Keever’s influence and the foundations she gave me not only in so many artistic disciplines but also in the important concepts of light, shadow, and perspective. She built my confidence and set me on a path of artistic growth and exploration.
Discovering Purpose and Passion
Painting became my sanctuary, blending my two passions: science and art (see February blog post). Growing up, my fascination with the natural world seamlessly intertwined with my love for art.
As I delved deeper into painting, I realized that painting wasn't just about replicating what I saw; it was about capturing the essence of my emotions and experiences on canvas.
Through exploration, I discovered new techniques and embraced the imperfections that make each piece unique. Whether I was working with oils, watercolors, or mixed media, each medium presented its own challenges and rewards, allowing me to push the boundaries of my creativity.
Painting evolved from a hobby into a lifelong passion, providing me with purpose and fulfillment. It allowed me to connect with myself and the world around me in profound ways. With each brushstroke, I gained a deeper understanding of myself as both an artist and a person.
Inspiration and Influence
Nature, daily experiences, and emotions serve as constant sources of inspiration for my artwork. Each moment serves as a catalyst for creative exploration.
The influence of other artists, both past and present, cannot be overstated. Studying the works of masters such as Johannes Vermeer, J.M.W. Turner, and Vincent Van Gogh deepened my understanding of color theory, composition, and artistic expression. Each artist brings a unique perspective to the canvas, inspiring me to experiment with new techniques and push the boundaries of my creativity.
Contemporary artists also play a significant role in shaping my artistic vision. Through exhibitions, art books, and online platforms, I discover the works of emerging talents from around the world. Their innovative approaches and fresh perspectives challenge me to think outside the box and continue evolving as an artist. Studying with master artists, conversations with fellow artists, and opportunities to exhibit my work further enrich my creative process, providing valuable insights and inspiration.
Gratitude and Invitation
As I reflect on my artistic journey, I am grateful for the mentors and experiences that have shaped me into the artist I am today. From Mrs. Keever's guidance during my formative years to the inspiration I draw from my current mentors and fellow artists, each person and encounter has left an indelible mark on my path.
Through my painting 'When the Rains Came,' I invite viewers to explore the emotional depths of art. I extend an invitation to embark on their own artistic journey, to explore emotions, spark conversations, and share in the profound beauty of art.
Conclusion
My artistic journey, reflected in 'When the Rains Came,' underscores the power of art to evoke emotions and foster connections. It's a testament to the transformative nature of creativity and the enduring influence of those who have guided and inspired me along the way. As I continue to paint, I carry with me the lessons learned and the experiences shared, shaping each artwork with intention and passion. I hope to inspire others to discover their own 'whys' and find solace, joy, and purpose in the world of art. Visit my website to learn more: LesliePalmer.com
